The Behavioral Science Association at Northwest Missouri State University is gearing up to host its annual “I Will Listen” event this month, aiming to combat the stigma surrounding mental health through educational activities and advocacy. The event, scheduled for March 28th, will be held at the J.W. Jones Student Union and is open to the public.

“This event provides an open, honest and accepting space for people of all ages to express themselves through a variety of activities,” said Sada Irving, president of the Behavioral Science Association. “Just being present at this event aids in the spreading of awareness and the ending to the stigma surrounding mental health. This is a chance for our whole community to come together, enjoy each other's company and act as a group of individuals who will listen – which is needed everywhere.”

The event will feature a lineup of speakers including Dr. Shay Malone, Dr. Jacob Tengelsen, Dr. Amy Hillard, Latonya Davis, and Elizabeth Motazedi. Additionally, there will be an exercise room offering yoga and circuit training sessions for attendees to participate in.

An art exhibit in the Student Union Boardroom and Ballroom will showcase approximately 350 pieces of art, ranging from drawings and paintings to poetry and photography. The artworks have been submitted by Northwest students and employees, as well as local youth. Attendees will also have the opportunity to engage in a paint-and-sip activity for a fee of $10, with all proceeds from the event being donated to the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

The event promises to provide a platform for important discussions, creative expressions, and the coming together of the community to support mental health awareness and advocacy.
